When you book with a van line, there is a high chance your items will be mixed with another shipment. There is also a high chance your items will be offloaded at a warehouse for storage in transit until another driver comes to pickup for delivery. These operations put your items at risk of being lost or destroyed in the process. On top of that, your delivery window can be quite wide, in some cases up to two weeks or more. Lastly, the crew hired to load your belongings are often unlicensed, uninsured laborers being paid a day-rate to load your belongings. The driver himself may not know what quality of work his crew can produce.

The interstate moving space is unfortunately full of bad actors. Scams can take many forms, but here are the most common:

• Bait and switch - a broker will represent themselves as a moving company, when in reality they have no employees or trucks. Their goal is to sell you on a very low price and then sell your job to an actual moving company, who will often need to charge more to cover the actual scope of work. Always verify your mover has an active USDOT number and MC number.

• Too good to be true - If you receive a price for an interstate move that is far lower than any other quotes you’ve gotten, there’s a good chance the inventory has been purposely deflated to get you to sign. Often times the offers are portrayed as time-sensitive. The rep will push you to sign while on the phone, usually in one call. Once move day arrives and proper inventory is taken, you could be on the hook for a lot more than expected.

• Fly-by-night - These are movers that operate across state lines without authority from the FMCSA. They do not carry the minimum insurance and compliance requirements. FMSCA consumer regulations, such as pricing and billing rules, claim rules, and disclosures do not apply to unlicensed movers. If your items are damaged or lost, you have no recourse. If a rogue mover is caught operating outside state lines, your belongings could be confiscated.
